Really helpful session- time well spent
I’m 48 and just in the middle of going self-employed, so I’ll be honest, I wasn’t really sure what I was doing with all this invoicing and accounts stuff. Had an onboarding call with Fretzie and it’s made a big difference. She explained everything in a way that actually made sense, didn’t rush through it, and let me ask questions as we went along. I felt confident I was chatting it through with someone who knows their stuff, and not just being talked at. She gave me lots of tips that I can actually use for what I’m setting up. Recently registered for VAT and moved onto Xero after previously just having my accounts done annually. I’ve now been using it for a couple of months and honestly think it’s excellent. It’s made managing paperwork, finances and VAT as a sole trader much more straightforward and organised. I did have one issue early on, but their support team resolved it within a few hours, which was very reassuring. There is a monthly cost, but in my opinion it’s well worth it for the time saved and overall visibility of the business finances. If you’re self-employed and looking to step up how you manage your accounts, I would definitely recommend Xero.

A very clear introductory session with a Xero agent - but MTD is still very daunting!
I had a free half hour introductory session with a Xero agent. Dara took me through all the main functions of my Simple Xero account, using my shared screen of my Xero account. He explained that the MTD function has not yet been activated (even though it is due to start in April - a couple of weeks' time). Dara was very clear and patient. He sent me a very useful summary of points covered, with links to relevant articles. However, as a sole practitioner of psychotherapy, unused to digital accounts and the technicalities of accounting, I am still finding MTD extremely daunting and alarming.

Good for my S Corp payroll
I elected S corp status for my agency earlier this year and quickly realized I was in over my head with the payroll requirements. You can't just pay yourself however you want anymore - you need "reasonable salary," withholdings, quarterly taxes. I'm not an accountant but Gusto walked me through everything. The setup process helped me figure out what a reasonable salary should be based on my industry and revenue, set up the withholdings, and got me registered with the state tax agency. Took maybe an hour total. The payroll runs automatically on my schedule. Taxes get calculated, withheld, and paid automatically. Easy to pay yourself both salary (with taxes) and distributions (without payroll taxes). You can do both from the same dashboard. This was confusing as hell when I was researching how S corps work, but Gusto makes it simple. If you're a solo founder or small agency owner who just elected S corp status, don't try to DIY this.

Every aspect of using Gusto from setting up in the platform, onboarding employees, and running payroll has been exceptional. I switched from Paychex which was a complete nightmare and I am so happy that I did. Gusto makes it so easy to handle everything on your own including an incredibly helpful AI chatbot. A breath of fresh air. We have used Sage in the past, but last year tried a different provider. Well we're back! Natalie Cade was allocated to us as our Enablement Consultant. What a star. She has been great, patient, gave clear instruction, listening to our questions and explaining changes to the system since we last used it. Natalie has held our hand through the whole process from preparing our data, uploading it and re introducing us to the processes including highlighting new functions. We are looking forward to being back in the safe hands of a payroll system that is fit for purpose with a credible support team if and when needed. I thought my account had been hacked when an alternative email showed up in my saved passwords and I thought I had been hacked. When I called the tech listened, understood, consulted with a colleague (second set of eyes concerning my inquiry), and assured me that the account was secure and the email was correct. He explained that sometimes a different email address and password can pop up when logging on another website. All account information was verify and nothing was changed in the account. Very patient and I trusted him
